Hechi, the iconic character of Seoul beloved by its citizens, is back with a head-to-toe makeover for the first time in 15 years. Hechi’s four Soul Friends, the Four Guardian Deities (“Blue Dragon”, “White Tiger”, “Red Bird”, “Black Tortoise”), also made their first public debut, rounding out the full look of the character group.
The new Hechi was first unveiled to Seoul citizens at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Oullim Square on Thu, Feb. 1 in the form of a gigantic 8m balloon art.
The city introduces stories and worldview of Hechi and Soul Friends on the official Instagram account (@hechi.soul.friends). With Insta Toon (Instagram + Cartoon), you can learn more about each of these five characters and how they came to be.
The city of Seoul also launched Hechi and Soul Friends merchandise to attract fans in earnest. 6 products are available at the DDP Design Store offline and online shop (ddpdesignstore.org). Goods include stationery (notebooks, L-shape folders, post-it notes, masking tape) and items that people can easily purchase and use in their daily lives, such as mugs and acrylic keychains (overseas delivery unavailable). The product offerings will expand to feature neck pillows, sleeping pads, plush keychains, and character plushies, etc.
The city of Seoul said it expects many of its citizens to discover the charm of Hechi and Soul Friends with various content and find their own reasons to become fans.
